The growth of offsite manufacturing and modern methods of construction presents a significant opportunity to reshape the industry’s approach to skills. Factory-based environments can offer safer, more predictable working conditions and attract people who may not consider traditional site roles.
These roles often sit at the intersection of construction, manufacturing and engineering, requiring a mix of technical, digital and quality-focused skills.
Training frameworks must adapt to reflect this shift, with greater emphasis on integration, process control and digital workflows.
A coordinated approach is essential
While many employers are investing in training initiatives, the scale of the challenge requires a coordinated national response. Government, industry bodies, clients and educators must align on long-term workforce planning, funding stability and procurement models that support skills investment.
Without this alignment, skills shortages risk becoming a persistent constraint on delivery, undermining efforts to increase housing supply, upgrade infrastructure and meet net zero targets.
