The Builders Merchants Federation (BMF) has announced the six companies shortlisted for its Training Company of the Year 2026 award, recognising businesses that have demonstrated a strong commitment to workforce development and professional training.

The finalists are Lawsons (Whetstone), MD O’Shea & Sons, MGM Timber (Scotland), Pagets Builders Merchants, Robert Price Builders Merchants and Tippers.

The shortlisted businesses were nominated by the BMF’s Regional Managers, who work with members across the UK to support training and skills development.

Merchants recognised for investment in workforce development

Lawsons was shortlisted after developing a training programme combining online and face-to-face learning, including courses in external sales, key account management and an in-house Institute of Builders Merchants (IoBM) Diploma in Merchant Management. The programme is designed to equip branch teams with the skills and knowledge required while aligning with the company’s business objectives and values.

MD O’Shea & Sons was recognised for its investment in sales capability and customer service training across all three branches, with colleagues completing programmes covering stock management and customer service.

MGM Timber (Scotland), shortlisted for the second consecutive year, was acknowledged for providing training opportunities across much of its workforce, from counter and yard staff through to future business leaders.

Pagets Builders Merchants secured a place on the shortlist following the rollout of a learning and development programme covering sales, margin improvement, customer service and stock management. The business is also preparing a new group of employees to begin the IoBM Diploma in Merchant Management.

Last year’s winner, Robert Price Builders Merchants, returns to the shortlist after continuing to expand its training provision following recent acquisitions. Over the past year, programmes have included internal sales management, plumbing and heating sales, housebuilding, artificial intelligence for the building materials sector and social media.

Tippers was shortlisted for its bespoke “Tippers Way” training programme, developed in partnership with the BMF, alongside investment in leadership development, warehouse management, stock control and apprenticeships.

Training recognised as key to industry development

Commenting on the shortlist, BMF Chief Executive John Newcomb said: “Training plays a crucial role in helping merchants develop colleagues at every stage of their careers.

“The six companies nominated by BMF Regional Managers have each demonstrated a strong focus on learning and development, with positive results evident throughout their businesses. All are highly deserving contenders for this Award, and I wish them the very best of luck.”

The winner of the BMF Training Company of the Year 2026 award will be announced at the BMF Members’ Day Awards Dinner on 17 September 2026, following the Federation’s Annual Conference.
