Former England rugby star to address builders’ merchants and construction supply chain leaders on performance, teamwork and overcoming challenges
Construction supply chain leaders will hear from former England Rugby World Cup winner Maggie Alphonsi MBE at this year’s Builders Merchants Federation (BMF) Annual Members Conference and Awards, as the sector continues to focus on workforce development, leadership and resilience.
Alphonsi, one of the most decorated figures in women’s rugby, has been confirmed as the keynote speaker for the event, which takes place at the Belfry Hotel and Resort in Sutton Coldfield on 16 and 17 September.
The announcement comes as construction and building materials businesses continue to face recruitment challenges, skills shortages and ongoing economic pressures, with many employers placing greater emphasis on leadership development, employee engagement and team performance.
Rugby World Cup winner to address construction supply chain leaders
During her international rugby career, Alphonsi earned 74 caps for England, scored 28 tries and helped secure a record-breaking seven consecutive Six Nations titles alongside victory at the 2014 Women’s Rugby World Cup.
She was named Sunday Times Sportswoman of the Year, won six Six Nations Grand Slams and became the first woman to receive the Rugby Union Writers’ Club Player of the Year award.
Since retiring from professional rugby, Alphonsi has built a successful broadcasting career, working as a commentator and analyst for ITV, BBC and Sky Sports. She is also one of six female members of the Rugby Football Union’s 56-member Council.

At the conference, Alphonsi will discuss lessons from elite sport, including performing under pressure, overcoming adversity and succeeding in traditionally male-dominated environments.
